Websites use SSL certificates to encrypt data sent between the web server and the visitor’s web browser, using the HTTPS protocol. When a site is secured in this way, visitors will see the padlock icon in the address bar of their browser, and be offered assurance that the connection is secure. Conversely, sites using only the HTTP protocol – unencrypted communication – will be indicated as “not secure”, a clear discouragement to continue visiting the site.
